“This film explores the transformations in the material landscape of the Sunila pulp mill and housing area in Southeast Finland: a planned industrial community designed by Alvar Aalto in the 1930s, which has undergone a process of marginalisation during the last decades. Once a symbol of industrial progress, Sunila was originally conceived as a utopian ‘forest town’, embodying the modernist ideal of a semi-urban residential area that integrated work and leisure. As of the 1980s, most of the real estate for factory staff has been transferred to private owners, following a period of economic depression that led to massive cuts in workforce and the dismantling of public services in the village. Privatisation in Sunila not only eroded its social fabric, but also transformed the architectural logic of the housing plan to the point of rendering it illegible.”
